they are wood (or maybe they are not real wood?). they are old and the color is fading and they have some hair coloring (dark brown) on them. How can I refurbish them? If I want to keep the original color what should I do?

I dont know if you can keep the color unless you can find paint that color.You are right on about lightly sanding,then primer before painting.I did my bath cabinets 3 years ago,went from dark brown to white and they still look great. Add new hardware to complete
