Cat gets into the cabinets!?!?
It always seems like questions whose titles include “?!?!” get more attention. Don’t know why that is, but I thought I’d try it.
Here’s my dilemma:
Thursday Jones has taken interest in the contents of my kitchen cabinets. His favorite cabinets are the one below the sink that contains the cleaning products, and the one above the sink where the food is. I’m currently living in an apartment and I have left a message with management asking permission to install child safety latches. It may be a couple of days yet before I hear back from them.
Until I hear back from management, or IF I don’t get permission to install latches, what can I do to keep Mr. Thursday “Curiosity is Going to Kill The Cat” Jones out of my cabinets?
I should note that the kitchen cabinets have no knobs.
When you are not there lean something against them so Thursday can’t get in.
When you are home keep an eye on her and each time she goes into the cabinet take her out immediately at the same time saying ‘no’ (or what words best suits) sharply and firmly. Every so often try saying it when you see her approaching and before you actually touch her. Reward her with pats or soft words if she stops herself.
I had a problem with my cat barging in to her food bowl before I had withdrawn my hand (dry food) which knocked the food out of my palm. I held her back gently and as I bent to put the food in her bowl I would say ‘no’ if she tried to get past. It took awhile but eventually we reached the stage where she would wait until I had put the food in and had said ‘good girl’ and patted her before she would start eating. You have to be consistent.
Would putting a bit of blue tac between the cabinet door and the frame be strong enough to hold them?
