Kitchen Cabinet Pulls 3 Inch Questions

Should I run backer board all the way down, behind my kitchen sink?

My sink and immediate area gets a lot of water and I am installing small glass tiles as a back splash. The dry wall is the standard drywall and I am thinking I should run green board or backer board in the immediate area of the sink. The main question is: If I cut the dry wall and replace it with backer, I need to leave about 3 inches to tape etc. So the seem of the back splash and counter top (granite) would not have backer behind it. Should I pull the cabinet away and green board below the seem? Any advice would be great, thanks.

When I remodel kitchens, I use green board only. Backer board is for heavy water applications, like showers.

That being said, here is a tip for applying greenboard in kitchens. First of all, lay it sideways. Secondly, put a 2′ strip at the bottom, a full 4′ piece above that and the rest of the 2′ piece at the top. “Why?”, you ask.

Simple. Your tape joints will all be covered by cabinets that way and only a light skim coat is necessary.

Good luck

How to Choose the Best Kitchen Cabinets

In remodeling your kitchen, you will want to choose the best kitchen cabinets. Manufacturing methods and materials are top priorities when determining quality. You will also want to think about what are the best cabinets for you. There are many factors to consider.

Materials

Hardwoods make some of the highest quality materials, with oak, maple and cherry among the best. Make sure the grain matches well among the pieces. Fine finishes are also a must. The best kitchen cabinets have durable hardware that is also attractive.

Laminates and thermo foil manufactured finishes may be the best kitchen cabinets for your home, if you are more concerned about easy cleanup and less expensive cost. However, they are not as durable as solid wood on cabinet fronts.

Inside the cabinets, the best kitchen cabinets may be the ones with veneer-covered plywood or particleboard, simply because these materials do not warp over time the way solid wood does.

Manufacturing Methods

Custom cabinets tend to be crafted and manufactured to high standards. These are often the best kitchen cabinets, if you can afford them.
Heavy duty construction is important, because cookware can weigh a lot. Doors and frames should be able to stand up to being opened and closed often, and frames and fronts should be able to stand up to bangs and spills.

For the best kitchen cabinets, look for the following construction details: dovetailed or doweled joints on drawers, mortised corners on butt joints, 3/4 inch-thick face frames. Make sure the drawers will pull all the way out without sticking, jamming or falling out unnecessarily. Drawers should move on their drawer glides smoothly. Drawer sides should be 1/2 to 3/4 inches tall, and shelves should be 3/4 inches thick, preferably of plywood.
Your Choice

To determine the best kitchen cabinets for you, think about the cabinets you have now. Evaluate the problems you are having with them that have caused you to consider buying new cabinets. Include issues like lack of cabinet or countertop space, blind corners, shelves that are too deep, not enough drawers to hold your utensils or specialty cabinets you would like to have. Decide if you like the style of your present cabinets, or you would like to change to a different style.

The cabinets that are right for you should definitely be strong sturdy cabinets. They should wear well and look the way you want them to do. Do not forget that the cabinets are for your use and enjoyment, so your best kitchen cabinets will also be those that satisfy your ideals.
